A hernia takes place when the inner layers of the abdominal wall weaken and get swollen or scratched. The internal lining of the abdomen pushes through the destabilized part of abdomen to form a balloon-like pouch. This, sequentially, can cause a round of intestine or abdominal tissue to fall into the pouch, causing pain and other potentially serious health disorders.
Women and men of all ages can have hernias. Hernias generally cause either due to normal weakness in the abdominal wall or from extreme damage on the abdominal wall, like the damage due to heavy lifting, extensive weight gain, continual coughing, or trouble in bowel movements or urination. Majority of all hernias are situated near the groin. Some cases hernias may also found below the groin (femoral), through the navel (umbilical) and beside the previous cuts or surgeries.
There are different kinds of hernias. Some of the most common types of hernias include:
Abdominal Hernia
An abdominal organ or fatty tissues stick out through a weakened part of the abdominal wall, resulting in a extension
Anal Hernia
Tissue protrudes through the membrane just about the anal area.
Diaphragmatic Hernia
Hernia results because of extension in the part of stomach through the diaphragm, an opening in the diaphragm from which the bowel can go through, it is also called as congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
Hiatal Hernia
Hiatal Hernia develops at the gap in the diaphragm from where the esophagus connects the stomach.
Herniated Disc
The cushion that present in between the spinal vertebras is compressed outside its usual position. As the spinal disc drops its flexibility, it may shatter. This shattering may cause a segment of the spinal disc to push outward from its usual boundary and resulting in a herniated disc
Umbilical Hernia
This type is common in children. The abdominal wall is weaken when the umbilical cord enters or leaves the belly button or naval. It can also be found in puppies.
Epigastric Hernia
This type is develop between the naval and breastbone. Fat overhangs through the abdominal wall.
Pelvic Hernia, Inguinal Hernia
It occurs in the small gap between tissues or parts of organ projecting into the pelvis from the interior inguinal ring. The inguinal ring is at the opening to the inguinal canal.
Ventral Hernia
This form is very commonly found after a surgical operation or trauma, where due to injury abdominal wall become weakens, and leading to hernia.
Femoral Hernias
This type is common in females. It happens when fraction of the intestine overhang through the femoral canal, it extends through at the peak of the thigh
Obturator Hernia
In this case small fragment of intestine enter through the gap between bones in the front section of the pelvis.
