An ulcer is a sore, which simply means an open, aching lesion. Peptic ulcers are ulcers which develop in the abdomen. Ulcer that develops in the upper portion of the small intestine is known as duodenum ulcer and ulcer that develops in the stomach is called a gastric ulcer and together they are known as peptic ulcer. Many persons believe that spicy foods are the main cause of peptic ulcers, but the fact is that bacteria known as Helicobacter pylori (or H. pylori) are responsible for peptic ulcer. One more believe is that adults who are in high-stress jobs are mainly affected by peptic ulcer, but actually people of any age and even kids are can develop ulcers.
As both a gastric ulcer and a duodenal ulcer are caused because of H. pylori, but also there are some drugs that weaken the defensive mucous covering of the stomach and duodenum and results peptic ulcer. Both the acid and the bacteria can irritate the coating and cause an ulcer to shape. H. pylori infection is frequently contracted in childhood, possibly due to food, water, or close contact with an infected person. Infections are common in elder people; especially those who are older than age 60 and from developing countries are at higher risk. Many people with H. pylori don't show any sign until they're older. In fact, they live there whole life unaware that they're infected.
